Caring For Cut Flowers
You just received a bouquet of
roses and they are gorgeous, but for how long. You know that it is just a
matter of time before they begin to wilt and eventually die. Here are some
tips to get the most out of your cut flowers.
Cutting Your Flowers Stems
Before putting your flowers in
water, cut the stems at an angle underneath water. Cutting them at an
angle will give your flower more surface area in which to absorb
nutrients. Cutting them under water will prevent air from getting into the
veins of your flowers. If an air bubble gets in, it will be unable to
absorb nutrients.
Give Your Flowers Good Water
Tap water in most areas is hard
water. It is full of minerals which make it alkaline. This alkaline water
does not get absorbed into your plant well. To remedy this, make sure you
use the flower food provided by your florist. It will make the water more
suitable for your flowers. You could also use distilled water. Use room
temperature water and be sure to replace your water every couple of days.
Keep Your Flowers Clean
If any leaves fall off of your
flowers remove them from the water as soon as possible. If any leaves will
be below the water line, cu them off. Dead leaves will promote the growth
of bacteria which will harm your flowers.
Remove dead or wilted flowers for the same reason.
Keep Your Flowers Away From
Heat
Keep your flowers away from
heat sources like ovens and direct sunlight. They can kill your flowers by
drying them out. Try to keep your flowers in a cool place at around 70
degrees Fahrenheit.
