Sunflowers

Sunflowers are annual plants
with a distinctive large flower. The flower can reach 30 centimeters in
diameter with a stem growing up to 3 meters tall. The flower is actually a
head which contains rows of small flowers crowded together.
They are a native flower of the
Americas and were first brought to Europe in the 16th century. They grow
best in full sun and are considered a weed by some because of their
ability to grow in corn fields, etc.
Sunflowers are commercially
important as a food source both for humans and birds. Sunflower seeds are
sold as snacks and as a large component of bird seed. Oil extracted from
sunflower seeds is used for cooking and most recently has been used to
form biodiesel, a promising alternative fuel source.
